Private label products are store brand variations of national brands, typically offered at a discount. Let's begin the review of heavy metal band Black Label Society's "Catacombs of the Black Vatican" with a little explanation about private label items you'd find at a grocery store (irregular, yes, but your patience is appreciated). Needtobreathe performs June 8 at the Pabst Theater, 144 E. When those tributes to the Lord occasionally come, as when frontman Bear Rinehart sweetly sings, "Oh, if God is on my side, who can be against me?" the effect is more powerful than anything on the latest albums from Christian acts like Casting Crowns, MercyMe, Chris Tomlin or TobyMac. Instead, the inspiration can be found in the beauty of its lyrics - as on "Wasteland": "In this wasteland where I'm living/there is a crack in the door filled with light/And it's all that I need to get by") - and the spirit of its music in "State I'm In" with its doo-wop vocals and Kings of Leon-like guitar riffs, or "Oh Carolina," which channels the sound and soul of CCR. On its new record, "Rivers in the Wasteland," Needtobreathe can be categorized as Christian rock, but the band isn't overt about its faith. There's nothing wrong with that, but the songs often become preachy, and perhaps unintentionally, inclusive. The expectation of contemporary Christian artists is they have to be explicit about their faith. Jason Derulo performs May 17 at the Rave, 2401 W. Most of the high-energy songs that follow are pretty generic, too, although there's a surge of fresh energy on the flirty club anthem "The Other Side." There are other fun, butt-shaking jams, from the opening title track, with its woozy clarinet sample from Balkan Beat Box's "Hermetico" to the smitten love song "Trumpets" and a second silly butt-loving track, the sweet and poppy "Bubblegum." Then the sugar rush hits a lull, starting with the dull duet "Vertigo" with Derulo's real life flame, Jordin Sparks. It's Jason Derulo's "Wiggle," on the R&B-flavored pop singer's latest album "Talk Dirty." The outlandish ode to the booty has an addictive whistle hook, exuberant "Oh yeah!"s, a Snoop Dogg cameo (of course), screeching eagle sound effects (for real), and so-stupid-they're-hilarious lyrics: "Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle/just a little bittle." It's just as ridiculous as "Baby" and just about as catchy.
It's been more than two decades since Sir Mix-a-Lot's "Baby Got Back," but the worthy successor we've been waiting for has finally emerged.
